Since 2008, a wave of Islamophobia – the irrational fear and/or hatred of Islam and Muslims – has taken root in some corners of the American consciousness. Numerous factors have contributed to this phenomenon, including but not limited to – the economic recession, nationalism and anti-immigrant sentiment, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, racist backlash after the election of President Obama, an increase in domestic terrorism and much more. Most importantly, an organized network of anti-Muslim organizations has developed over the past 10 years and has reached a critical mass. This network is the chief contributor to much of the misinformation and fear mongering of Islam and Muslims. The effects of this misinformation are many – from hate crimes, mosque opposition and law enforcement profiling, to anti-religious freedom (shariah ban) legislation proposed across multiple states. This phenomenon is crucial for all Americans to understand.
